Ceasefire Lasted Hours: Israel Killed 254 in Lebanon, Iran Suspends Hormuz Deal
Hours after the ceasefire was announced, Israel launched its largest Lebanon attack of the war — 254 killed, 1,165 wounded in central Beirut. Netanyahu said Lebanon "isn't covered." Iran accused Israel of violating the deal and is suspending Strait of Hormuz tanker traffic.
The ceasefire that Trump announced on April 7 — the one that was supposed to end six weeks of war — lasted less than 24 hours.
On April 8, Israel launched its largest attack on Lebanon since the war began, striking dense commercial and residential areas in central Beirut without warning. The toll: 254 killed and 1,165 wounded in a single day.
Prime Minister Netanyahu declared that the U.S.-Iran ceasefire "does not apply to Lebanon" and Israel's fight against Hezbollah. This directly contradicted the ceasefire mediators — Pakistan's Prime Minister had stated the deal covered Lebanon.
Iran's response was immediate:
- Accused Israel of violating the ceasefire
- Began suspending tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz
- Considered pulling out of the deal entirely
The ceasefire was supposed to be Trump's off-ramp — the "temporary win" that let him declare victory and move on. Instead, Israel blew it up within hours, and the Strait that was the entire point of the deal is closing again.
The fundamental problem: Trump negotiated a ceasefire with Iran but couldn't — or wouldn't — control Israel. Netanyahu has his own objectives in Lebanon that don't align with Trump's need for an exit. Trump brokered a deal he couldn't enforce with an ally he couldn't restrain.
254 people died in Beirut the day after the ceasefire was announced. The deal that cost 13 American lives and $25 billion to reach didn't survive one day.
