Hegseth Accused of Lying to Trump About Iran War Progress — "Not Speaking Truth to the President"

White House officials say Hegseth is feeding Trump false information about the war. He bragged about "complete control of Iranian skies" on March 4. A month later, two U.S. jets were shot out of the sky. Official: "Pete is not speaking truth to the president."

Administration officials told the Washington Post and Wall Street Journal that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is misrepresenting the U.S. military's progress in Iran, feeding Trump a false picture of imminent victory.

An administration official stated directly: "Pete is not speaking truth to the president. As a result, the president is out there repeating misleading information."

The specific deceptions:

  • "Complete control of Iranian skies": Hegseth bragged about this on March 4. Roughly a month later, Iran shot down an F-15E Strike Eagle and hit an A-10 Warthog — two U.S. fighter jets shot out of the sky in a single day
  • Missile/drone activity: Hegseth told Trump the lowest 24-hour period of Iranian launches was March 31. Internal documents show lower activity occurred on March 14, 15, and 22 — he cherry-picked a date to make it seem like a fresh achievement
  • 2-minute highlight reels: Hegseth provides Trump with "a steady diet of short videos showing U.S. airstrikes on Iranian targets" — curated propaganda that omits Iranian counterstrikes, U.S. losses, and strategic setbacks

The gap between Hegseth's briefings and reality:

  • Hegseth said Iran's capabilities were "just about used up" — Reuters reported 2/3 of Iran's missile arsenal is still intact
  • He claimed air superiority — Iran destroyed a $300M AWACS, a $500M THAAD radar, and shot down two fighters
  • He told Trump the war was going great — his own chief of staff Susie Wiles ordered aides to stop sugarcoating
  • He was "taken aback" that Iran fought back — TIME reported he said "Whoa, we're really in this now"

This is the same Defense Secretary who holds Pentagon worship services praying for "overwhelming violence," personally struck Black and female officers from promotion lists, fired the Army Chief of Staff for refusing to discriminate, leaked classified war plans on Signal twice, and whose broker tried to invest in defense stocks before the war.

He is now lying to the commander-in-chief about a war he is managing. The president making decisions about whether to escalate — including threatening to destroy "a whole civilization" — is doing so based on information his own officials say is false.
