Tried to Host G7 at His Own Struggling Resort

Trump announced the 2020 G7 summit would be held at his own Trump Doral resort — whose income had dropped 69%. Even Republicans couldn't defend it. He reversed course within 48 hours.

On October 17, 2019, Acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney announced Trump would host the 2020 G-7 summit at his own Trump National Doral Miami resort. The property's net operating income had fallen 69% from $13.8 million in 2015 to $4.3 million — the selection appeared designed to boost a struggling business with foreign government spending.

The decision would have forced foreign nations to house hundreds of personnel and pay millions to Trump's personal property. House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler called it "among the most brazen examples yet of the President's corruption."

The self-dealing was so naked that even Trump's most reliable Republican allies refused to defend it. Trump reversed course within 48 hours, blaming "Media & Democrat Crazed and Irrational Hostility."

Notably, Mulvaney's announcement of the Doral G7 came during the same press conference where he inadvertently admitted the Ukraine quid pro quo, telling reporters: "We do that all the time with foreign policy... Get over it."
